Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
Pete, Thanks. Only trying to help. Myself and others on this forum want to help anyone that comes to this forum (except the spammers). We are all learning here and we all have different opinions and techniques so sharing is beneficial IMHO. While I have been doing woodworking for 30+ years, it hasn...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
RFGuy, I agree with pretty much everything you posted above on wood movement and humidity. My point was that by knowing where the wood moisture content of the wood is and understanding ones climate, it can help ensure a better result. All that understood, as you said, neither time climate or wood is...

Hi Pete, You asked about my desk from years ago... here is a link to the final look. The top was made of long oak planks joined with glue and dowels: https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?p=11464#p11464 Good luck in your endeavors! nuhobby, Well, I'm impressed. Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
Pete, We tend to use shorthand here, while I am a fast typist and can be verbose at times, I can also be lazy. ;) "JMO" is Just My Opinion. "OP" is Original Poster, which I referred to you as initially before I saw that you included your name, Pete, in a post. Feel free to use m...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
Hey There! Miss Me? Hahaha Man, you guys are going out of your way to educate me. So much good stuff here that I can see I'm going to be typing for a while. With that in mind, I'm going to back up a bit to acknowledge some things better than I did earlier. I'm going to try and hit the items that I f...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
I very much appreciate everyone's input and advice. I've carefully read your posts and and I've re-read the section on Horizontal Boring in Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. All of it is helpful and helps me to set my expectations in the right place. I plan to follow up with my results and experi...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
Okay,I understand what I'm reading. Butting and tying the tables together to gain rigidity. I have a 510 that was converted to a 520 and I have everything I need to do this. I also understand about laying the boards top down for drilling. Also thanks for the clamp links. I'm aware of them and I will...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
What are your recommendations for glueing the boards together and keeping them flat?
What type of clamps should I be using?
Are there clamping techniques that work best?

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue
One does not need to use dowels to make a cutting board or a table top. In fact, it is probably a waste of time and effort. As long as your edges are well jointed, glue is all you need. Doweling is for reinforcing joinery where things come in at (usually) right angles. It is an alternative to morti...
