Hi Terry, There's nothing wrong with using a faceplate/handwheel, but the Alternative does have a lower surface speed - so it might be considered safer. The large surface area makes slowing the lathe down fairly comfortable. What JPG said. I use my 3" faceplate with a piece of wood attached as ...

Hi Bob, I know of this product. That's why I titled my post "Alternative". The Shopsmith Quill Twister appears to do a fine job of rotating the quill, but you can not leave it attached, and you can not use it to slow down rotation after cutting power during turning. I'd like to see Shopsmi...

Alternative "Quill Twister"

I work at the Woodcraft in Indianapolis. I noticed that a Jet lathe used an aluminum extension on the back of the headstock in order to rotate the headstock shaft (Jet.jpg, below). I also noticed that Beall has an adapter for their buffing system that is very similar to that extension (Beall.jpg, be...

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the note of confidence! I agree that I might get a few eBay sales, but I expect that someone would just come out with others that would beat my price. What I plan to do this week is write up an article and see if a magazine might be interested.

Tablet (or ereader) Stands

My mass-produced project this year is tablet stands. I teach, and often make something for those in my Team. This year, the District provided iPads to the 3 building Principals (and some others) so I made one for each of them. The design for this is mine. The dimensions and joinery are not critical....

I assume ya put the duplicator to work! What are they going to be used on(stair rail, balcony, ???). That does not look like hobby work! Interesting! Hi JPG, I've about worn out a couple of the bits for my duplicator, but I think they'll make it to the end. I beleive that they are being used on a p...

Hi William, 1" oak is easily within the capabilities of the Shopsmith 520. I was asked to do a spindle duplication job this summer from white oak. I was given 2.5" square rough blanks, and asked to produce 2.25" square finished turnings. After I jointed two sides, I ripped the other t...
