The newspaper article mentions 1954, but the AW story mentions '51. Both of them mention Arthur Godfrey, though MkV or ER? We know that Edgar Bergen used an ER. I've got a picture of him with Charlie McCarthy, and Mortimer Snerd, around his ER. (It always freaks out my women friends, when I show the...

Actually my favorite tool isn't the Shopsmith, its a sawmill. With a sawmill you can make round trees into small square boards which you can glue up into bigger square boards and put on the Shopsmith lathe and make round again. :D . OK, is it just me, or does Frances have the most quotable posts ar...

There are 2 major "issues" with the ERs. 1) the ER is made of a LOT of cast iron. If you didn't know cast iron is HEAVY! (Think drill-press mode.) 2) the saw feature is about the weakest part of the ER. (Or, any of the Shopsmith models, but the ER is the worst.) As has been mentioned, the ...

I've got a DC motor from Skip, and it is without a doubt, the best addition ever for an ER. Skip had a motor with a cracked end mount, but it also had a normal (type 56) mount. Looks funny if you look at the end bell, but it works just fine. It is a 1.5 HP motor, and will spin the old Magna 8 inch w...

I have often pondered how a metric crescent wrench differed from a 'normal' one!:D The size is listed in MM or CM. An 8 inch wrench is listed (usually on the other side) as a ** CM wrench. But, the "inch" wrench will work better on a bolt that is "inch." A "Metric" wre...

[quote="Gene Howe"]Stepped out of the shop just now. What a gorgeous day. 67 degrees, sun shining bright. Sitting on the deck, typing this. Coffee is hot and tasty. Dunkin' Doughnuts brand. Nice. Life is good! ] Now, I;m going to make Gene jealous. It hit 79 today. Yesterday we broke recor...

New? So new in fact that Magna/ Shopsmith invented the same type tool back in the 50's. The Shopsmith Jigsaw. I'll go you one better. The ER jigsaw, has a removable upper section, which makes almost identical to this. It will hold jigsaw blades, upside down, sticking up through a hole in the table....

in a recent workshop here (I think that it was David Ellsworth), the guest turner reported that some of their older museum-level pieces had partially fallen apart because some of the CA joints had lost their glue integrity. these were segmented bowls. they were easily repaired but it was a surprise...
