My guess would be overtightening with the ratchet handle, with a set screw in the ShopSmith Allen wrench you'll never get anywhere near as much torque as you can with the ratchet handle

Mounting the wire shelf couldn't be any simpler. I used four 2 inch machine screws not bolts machine screws are threaded all the way, Bolt them to the legs and lay the wire shelf on top. The two extension tables together I used masking tape to mark the holes, drill your first table with an 8th inch ...

I thought someone might find this useful, I squared the edges with my 50 grit conical Disksander and bolted them together.

I got mine used I am currently using it to make the Shopsmith Chess Set. It is really the first thing that I have made with it that I actually needed it for. It would be great for chairs maybe pens.
