Just ordered the SS basic set...

... from ebay for $21 shipped. Great condition and comes with a set of Allied twist bits. I was looking at the Lee Valley bits and Highland Woodworking carbide bits. What is the quality like on the SS brad point bits? I figured they would be better than the black and decker super cheep twist drills ...

I know this is an old thread...

... but our Shopsmith are not going anywhere. :) I have what appears to be the same chuck that Tim posted pictures of. Mine is bored all the way through and has same appointments and dimensions, but it lacks the shopsmith logo. Jacobs said that Tim's chuck is not a Jacobs, and I assume mine is not a...

Thanks Bob

I took your instructions and disassembled cleaned and lubed all the parts of the speed changing mechanisms. Good gravy. The cogs on the adjustment screw were pretty gunky, and the key on the shaves was a little gooped. Everything back together and I think this Shopsmith is ready to go. Thanks for al...

Humm... interesting on the belts!

Well, I took off the floating sheave in the motor and cleaned it with qtips and mineral spirits. There was goop on the shaft and in the pully key slot. I think the cold jelled up the oil, but it sure works lovely now. How hard is is it to disassemble the upper adjustment floating sheave? I didn't se...

Thanks

I have the headstock inside warming up and I will do a thurough clean and lube. Hopefully that and warmer temperatures soon will provide for a great running Mark V again. I must say, the belts look new. Both are Parelli. Is this the standard Shopsmith belt package were these replaced? I look forward...

Humm... Bill.

Interesting. So it really might just be a freeze up. :) That's an interesting tidbit. Guys I'm dying without a shop. I have a car port that is uninsulated, but it's long and I've put in a request to the owners to wall off the last 8 feet and insulate for a small shop. Hope it goes through and it sho...

Work in progress...

... I had never used the Shopsmith before. (Just turned it on and off and heard what the speeds are supposed to sound like). This is the first time I've oiled it. When I got it I cleaned it very well, repainted the legs that were rusting. Waxed the tubes. Also have been waiting on an Arbor I can use...

Floating Sheave Problem

Greetings, My 510 has been acting up. The speed control stopped working, so today I took a look inside the headstock. Pretty simple setup. After a clean and lubrication as per the manual I think I found the problem. The the floating sheave on the motor pully sticks wide open and so the belt just loo...

All excellent responses!

I forgot to subscribe to this thread and have been so busy that I plum forgot to check in recently--and here you have given some really good info that I was missing. Thanks. It sounds like either live or dead will work with a little wax as suggested, and I am the type that reads and studies before t...

How does the lathe work?

I've never owned or used a lathe before. Now I have a Shopsmith 510 that I have restored and I'd quite like to try the lathe. Shopsmith lathe chisels are on the way. My questions is, on the headstock end, the lath attachment turns with the headstock. The tail piece doesn't seem to turn and I expecte...
