JPG,
You are quite right, 12" would be a tad short for trailer decking. Something got changed between the 1st post and the 7th. In the 1st post the length was 20'.

Based on the dimensions he was cutting it to, it was probably destined for trailer decking. Have no experience with it myself, but from what I've been told, cottonwood's long fibers make it popular choice for decking in heavy equipment trailers.

Good discription, Ed.
Have wanted one for some time. A number of occasions in which I'd have used it if I'd had it. Just that I've never felt the need/want matched up with the cost.

Bill,
Sounds like you have come up with a better mouse trap. Like Peter, am more interested in greater floor clearance than ease of movement, but both would be improvement over original. Let me know when you have it ready to go.

It's not all bad. Few days ago I picked up a 1 X 6 X 10' for .51. It was better than what can often times be found in the rack. Had a 6 - 8" check in one end, otherwise nice piece. That was all I needed, but probably should have bought more as there was more full length lumber there. Hit it at ...

Nice job. I expecially like the beading you did on it.
Have ordered four of them for Christmas gifts. Like others, have heard of difficulties getting the inserts into the handles without splitting. Someone installed the insert before turning which sounds like a viable solution.

Of the three possible causes you listed, I would definately suspect #1 as being the culprit.
