Re: What to do with my tools
Ed, I understand how difficult it is to give up control of the tools you have enjoyed over the years. Hopefully you can find that someone or several someone's that will enjoy and continue to care for your tools as you have. That would be the best outcome. Having restored and resold a lot of Shopsmit...

Re: Power Cord Replacement
hkp7fan, Sorry to hear about your past experiences with Shopsmith. Someone at the old Detroit store didn't have enough knowledge to understand the differences of the Mark 5/V tools made over the years. In your case anything about the differences of the original "A" Headstock. Unfortunately...

Re: Shopsmith Machine, painted green, Mark 2
Michael, Belated but welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. If you read the posts of Just Bought a Mark 2 that Ed linked, you already understand some of the challenges and pitfalls of owning a Mark 2. As you read it you should understand that I got my first Mark 2 after my first post there. So, a correctio...

Re: speed changer center bit stuck
John, Thanks for posting the explanation of the original 0 to 8 Indicator scale. I have to guess that it did not work out as well as the engineers originally planned. It seems that a lot of belt stretching would have to occur to get to the 3 to 8 range. Having my other Shopsmith's (Mark V 520 and 7)...

Re: speed changer center bit stuck
It may be a good time for some Speed Changer 101. In the picture don1357 posted above the main casting is broken. (see arrow in the copy of his picture below) _ Broken Speed Changer don1357 arrow.jpg . The arrow is pointing to the place on the main casting where the "ear" (above the arrow)...

Re: VFD for 3 phase motor
I haven't tried a VFD converter or any variable speed motor control on any of my 24 Model 10E and 10ER restorations I have done so far so I cannot comment on how they work. As for motor horsepower, one of the Model 10E's I restored came with a "newer" 1 HP motor. Before it was completely r...

Re: speed changer center bit stuck
I had a floating center stuck on the sleeve as bad as the one you are describing. Yes, I ended up using my 12-ton press to get it off. Before using the press remove the oilite bearings first if you can, especially if they are still in good usable condition. These are brass and could be mushroomed ou...

Re: Mark V maximum idler bearing RPM
David and Ed, Thanks for adding that clarification. Out of the 7 Mark 5/V tools I have owned I have not had a problem with any of the Idler Shaft bearings. These range from 1957 Greenies to 2006. Because of that I have not had to look into replacing the bearing. I am still learning new things about ...

Re: Mark V maximum idler bearing RPM
mharmon, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. The serial number 205447 should have a prefix of SS and this Mark V was then made in May of 1985. To replace the bearing only you would first have to find the correct bearing, press the old one off the shaft and press the new one on. The Idler Shaft with the ...

Re: Speed Changer Shaft & Oilite Bushing Condition
If it was mine (and has been on at least one of my restorations) I would smooth down any raised ridges on the shaft to lessen wear on the new bearings. In use make sure the brass bearings are properly lubricated at all times to prevent additional damage. The replacement Speed Changer Oilite Bearings...
