OK, Remember you asked. Here are some photos I have. I took the last one this morning of random objects around the house. Like most turners, most items I turned ended up in other peoples homes before I took pictures. To be honest, some of these were turned on my Jet mini lathe and not the SS, but al...

Rick, Let's assume you wish to make a bowl out of your 30" x 12" log. Here are the steps: 1. With a chain saw, cut off any "checks", i.e. cracks from the end. 2. Cut the log into 12" lengths. 3. Cut each 12" length lengthwise so you have two bowl blanks, each about 12 x...

Rick, Two years ago, I found some wild cherry in a friend's firewood pile. It's beautiful wood and I've turned all sort of things from it. I've saved a piece of crotch wood that I plan to slice into 1/4" boards for box tops. I also rescued a section of Bradford pear. It's very easy to come by h...

Free Wood

Text from Rick in another thread. I guess to steer this thread in a slightly different direction.. About a year ago or so, I posted a few messages on my local Craigslist asking for people that had old (dead) or dying fruit trees that they were looking to get chopped up (and in this case sans any pes...

I guess I know better, but I store sheet goods vertically on a concrete floor and I've never had any real problems (except bowing). I would never store hardwood that way, but sheet goods seem to be OK. I've always thought that some day I'd build a cart to hold them off the floor and at an angle. The...

Alan, I'm not a member of the Greenville Guild. I've been to some of their meetings and plan to join, but never have. The time is getting close, however. I have a wonderfully piece of wild cherry crotch wood that I rescued from a firewood stack. I've been letting it dry and now I plan to slice it in...

Gary, The stays (slats) are from construction lumber that I face jointed, resawed and then planed to 1/4". Yes, I cut the stays at 9 deg on the table saw (20 stays equals 40 edges; 360/40 = 9 deg.). I always cut them a little oversize, do a trial fit, adjust the angle slightly and cut them agai...

I'm just so jealous. I'd love to find a used SS for sale in my area, but I haven't seen any. I'd use it as a drill press primarily.
