How about using a second treadmill mounted above the treadmill you currently have but turned 180 deg. so that it runs in the opposite direction. Just a thought and it would probably require some serious welding to make it work but used treadmills are pretty easy to find cheaply on CL.

What else will I find I need to get started in this new hobby?

Unfortunately it never ends what you will need and "want" just enjoy it and never ever look at the receipts.
