I wanted to come up with a way to make the tail stock on my Delta 46-460 lathe interchangable for use on a SS 510.
Here is the tailstock on the Delta.

I used a tie down lock to secure the new assembly to the original SS ways.

Very cool. Given the design, you could also perhaps use the toolrest (banjo) off of the delta as well.

Interesting. Personally I find the lack of a MT2 in the spindle/headstock to be more limiting in my turning than the stationary tailstock. I can see that this could make threading and tapping operations more efficient.

It is not the lack of an mt2 in the quill that limits you, rather it is the lack of 5/8" straight arbors etc. that you want to use. You can get a "solid morse taper socket" from places like Enco that you could probably then mount in a chuck to adapt morse taper arbors, etc., to the Shopsmith. But this does extend whatever you're mounting out there quite a ways from the Shopsmith spindle and bearings and introduce some additional runout and flex. I'm not sure what the back end of one of these adapters is like, but it may be possible to bore one out to 5/8" (or add a sleeve) and add a set screw so that it could be mounted directly to the Shopsmith spindle.

Additional details and questions
Wish I had taken a few progress photos but will try to provide additional information from what I have.
The first step involved preparing the new way sections. I ordered a one foot piece of 5/8" x 2" tool steel and used a metal cutting band saw to cut the metal in half lengthwise. This probably could be done with a hack saw but I would not attempt it.
Next, I made sure the SS head stock and tail stock centers were in alignment then mounted the Delta tail stock between centers on the shopsmith. This was and attempt to trim the new tail stock mount and to eliminate any pitch or yaw while keeping the head and tailstock centers in alignment. Here is a photo of the Delta tail stock mounted between centers.

The tube holes on the hold downs were cut off to allow them to fit over the SS ways. These were placed on the ways and the hanging Delta tail stock with the new ways was used to mark where the hold downs needed to be cut off. I cut just a bit extra off so the new ways would sit on a 1/4 plate frame that would be made to support the new ways. An appropriate sized piece of 1/4" plate was cut and bolted to the SS hold downs.

Two 1/4" x 1 17/32" verticle frame pieces were made as part of the support frame to support the new ways. Every things was again mounted on the SS and checked for alignment, pitch, and yaw. Feeler guages were used for the final fine adjustment before clamping the base together for welding.

The verticle supports can be seen in this photo welded (no comments on the welding please ) to the base plate and between the SS hold downs.

New to forum with a question

I have an old Atlas hobby lathe(metal working) tail stock that I want to adapt to my vintage Mark V similar to what you have done with the delta tail stock. My question is do you find you have cut yourself short on between center capacity?
I really like your layout, and am leaning that way, but was thinking that there really is not a need to move the tailstock back and forth on the way tubes...
I could be way wrong here
