Two Bearing Quill

Post by SDSSmith »

Other then headstock serial number, is there a way to examine the quill and determine whether it is a two bearing or single bearing quill?

Hi,

Yes, but it does require you to remove the quill from the machine. Once you have the quill out it is a simple matter of looking in from the back side.

Have a look at the pictures here:

The first few pictures are of the single bearing one and the last ones are of a two bearing one taken apart. You don't need to take it apart to tell but just make sure you are not tricked by the funny shaped washer.

Does anyone know the bearing number or the OD, ID and width of the second (in the middle) bearing on the two bearing quill referenced below. Thanks.

Bill, I found that I had to change the bearings and according to markings are standard bearings 60032 (big one) and 60022C3 (small one).
I am in the process of changing them on my machine.

SS sells the spindle assembly as part #514066.

If you encounter play in the pinned insert which links the spline end to the arbor head end you might have to purchase this unit unless you are able to shim it (only if wear allows you to)
