slanted board for power sander

Post by farley »

My mind is racing on this.
Once I glue up my segmented rings I run then through my power max sander.
This gets me a flat surface to accept glue on for the next ring.
I thinking that if I was to sand the ring at a slant, then glue up another ring I would get a weird effect and look, which is what I am going for.
Probably more than one ring would be needed to be slanted, depends on my design.

Here my ask:
If I made a sled for the ring to sit on with a slight slant, front to back, would I get a slanted ring after many passes?

thanks in advance

John,

I don't see why that wouldn't work. I'd guess that you'd want to have the slanted surface fully solid to support the ring fully. This concept could produce some wonderfully fun designs.

Just make sure the ring is secured with some double stick tape so it does not slip on the board. Also mark a registration point on the sled so that the subsequent rings have the same offset segment to segment otherwise your vessel will lean off kilter.

good thanks you guys,
these are points I have thought of, and since you guys are thinking the same thing, it should work.
will build sled and figure some sort of slant device today.
Pix will follow up.

so a quickie jig and the results are good.
the idea works.

I'll use the four segments I made and post a finished pix when done.

next jig will have a hinged end and some kinda movable space at the other end to give me more angle when wanted.

the salt in the pix is to show what I use it when clamping my segments together. Just a few drops and it prevents the segments from moving apart when clamps are applied. the salt dissolves leaving no gaps.

sorry the pix are so big, couldn't figure out the size SS accepted.

bowl is done.

results: so so.
I think I need more of an acute angle.
The sanded layer didn't fit as nice as usually, perhaps my jig was "soft".
The next one will be a little bit more thought out with heaver wood.

anyway here it is:

made a new jig with a better angle.
please with the results, but not as great a look as I thought.
Most people won't even see it.

Farley,

Glad that the concept works. I wonder if a stronger light/dark and/or color difference between layers would help, plus still might need more angle. I'm sure a large part of is it the shading in the photos, but I can see the slant better in the first than the second. I think the piece of spalted (maple?) on the top piece helps me better see the angle. Good progress on an interesting technique!
