How do I dismantle a seized carriage?

Post by stephanos »

I've had no problem for 25 years with the carriage on my 1980 vintage Mark V, but one day recently I found that the clamping mechanism on my carriage had seized up. Wise and cautious fellow that I am (NOT!), I took a pipe wrench to the spinner handle and promptly broke off one of its "ears." Well, I can replace that, I told myself, and then applied the wrench to the hub--and promptly broke off the threaded rod that runs through the mechanism.

My question is, how do I dismantle the carriage clamping mechanism so I can replace the broken parts? The threaded rod is broken off right at the base of the carriage. And, I presume, it is still seized up. If I put the Shopsmith in its vertical position, I can easily access the threaded rod where it passes beneath the carriage.

Any suggestions? (Other than don't use a pipe wrench!)

I don't know the experience level of everyone on this board, but I do know there are some users on the Yahoo Shopsmith group that can probably help you, so if you don't get any help here, try that forum.

The threaded rod is threaded into the Left and right wedge locks part number
504234 and 504235 respectively. You need to try to unscrew that rod to loosen them or cut the rod in half and order 513014 Headstock Lock Assm. (incl. 78-80) for $16.35 plus the wedge locks at $3.78 a piece. The headstock assembly includes the rod and spinner handle you broke plus the pin to hold it to the rod.
You will need to remove the headstock from the way tubes to get the wedge locks out I think.

Before you cut or attempt to loosen the rod make sure you have the head stock secured. The minute you loosen or cut the rod the headstock will be free to slide down the way tubes.
Hope this helps

Ed,
I think that stephanos is talking about his carriage lock, not the headstock lock.

If it's still seized, PB Blaster is the stuff you need. Douse it with this stuff, come back an hour or so later, and it'll be free.

Yes, I am talking about the carriage, not the headstock.
Cutting the threaded rod and getting a grip on it to try and back each half out of the carriage--that's what some of you are suggesting, and what suggests itself to me. I'll proceed cautiously, and use penetrating oil of some sort.
Thanks for the help!

If that is a 500 carriage, why go to all the work and expense? Upgrading to a 510 is easy. The parts, carriages and tables, can be found all the time on eBay.

Guys who use this and other sites have them for sale all the time and are good folks to deal with. I upgraded a Magna 1954 with all parts to a 520 setup for a fraction of buying the big upgrade set new.

Thanks, Chiro. That's something I should check out. Right now I just want to get back up and running.
