Newbie with serial number question, etc.

Post by oldskull »

Hello SS forum, I just bought a SS today. I believe it is a mark v model 500. I have been trying to find out when it as made. The serial number is 271859. It looks like that means it's a 1954. But it's not green, it's smooth grey. Anyway I see there is a beginner thread so I will start there tomorrow when I reassemble it. It wouldn't fit in my jeep without taking the passenger seat and back seat out. So with that, I got to see how it comes apart. We plugged it in and the saw blade barely moved; is that burnt motor? I will open it up tomorrow. I'm just wondering what to expect tomorrow. Thanks.

Skull, I'm not an expert on the Mk series, but pull off the inspection panels, and look for sawdust (or greasy crud) buildup. That is most likely your problem.

Oh, how much did you fork out?

Happens a LOT with new members here. Don't worry, someone (Admin?) will delete your extra posts.

Should have gotten an ER. With the back seat folded down, and the ER disassembled, it will fit in the back of a Honda. (Car, not a bike.)

Oh, WELCOME ABOARD!!

Based on this chart, I would say that it was born in June/July 1954. That would make it one of the more elderly members of this elite squad.

In addition to the serial number, what did it say about 'who' made it?

A 1954 would say Magna Engineering. It also would not have an inspection 'plate'.

If truly a 1954 Mark 5 and it is gray, means it has been repainted.

Welcome to the foru . . funny farm.:)

BTW does your browser indicate what it is doing? That be a clue that inet response is at times quite slow(waiting for SS server etc.).

I will try to post pictures when I get it put back together. I paid $125 for it but it needs to be cleaned up and it looks like its missing the drill chuck, lathe chucks, saw guards, sending disk, and the miter thing.
I don't expect it to be a 1954 model, I'll look at it more carefully when I get it out of my jeep.

I would advise that you not apply power until after you have cleaned it up and cleaned it out and spun the shaft a bit by hand (mount a blade and use it to get leverage over the shaft and pulleys). If it has sat idle for awhile, everything (especially the belts) is stiff.
