If you check the table against the miter gage slot to the table first with a good square,,,,, this should bring ya back to square rather quickly .

The 3" , 4" , 5" system works to.

The measurements have to be spot on

And you are looking for accuracy to within how many thou. I don't think so. The 3,4,5 method works great when you are framing a house or laying out foundations and fence lines.

The first picture is the best way to set it on a 500. It doesn't work with a 510 or 520 however. I always did it that way when I had my 500.

Why do you say it does not work on a 510 or 520? If the rails are set properly, it will work there as well. Don't rely on it working there unless you have verified your rails, however.

I think we are going down paths that are best not traveled. The compass head should be squared to the miter bar, simple as that, trusted square does that. Alignment to anything but the miter bar is asking for trouble.

Take short cuts and wonder why your cuts are off??? Have to sand to get them square and wonder why???

This is a discussion where you and I, Ed, will just have to be content in disagreement.

I don't align my miter gauge that way but I do use that as a way to verify alignment which is almost one in the same.

Peace!
