For those of you who don't like progress like having the angled set screw make sure you write and complain to shopsmith, enough of this trying to make things better, we don't need it.........
I remember my 41 Dodge that I use to use off road (old logging roads)racing. Time from point "A" to point "B". It had vacuum wipers and when you powered up coming out of a mud hole the wipers would stop..... loved guessing if driving blind was in order to see where the road when or letting your foot off the gas to see where it went. No power steering, no power brakes, ah the good old days I sure miss them. Oh yea the floor starter and a manual choke next to the manual throttle knob on the dash.......... where has progress taken us?

Re: Arbors
Do not misinterpret my 'opinion'. I agree that the skewed set screw bore is an improvement. If the older arbors had that skew, it would not be an improvement. This has gone far too far from my original intention. I considered it to be merely an observation of what once was.reible wrote:For those of you who don't like progress like having the angled set screw make sure you write and complain to shopsmith, enough of this trying to make things better, we don't need it.........

Flat bottom set screws will only be desirable with the skewed bores.
I do remember vacuum operated wipers.

Re: Arbors
The set screws for the Arbors made from 1947 to 1953 were 1/4" and used a 1/8" Allen Wrench. That is what Everett's drawing is showing. Other accessories made for the Model 10's used a 3/8" set screw along with most of the set screws holding the Model 10's together. With the introduction of the Mark 5, Magna changed as many of the set screws in their accessories as they could to 5/16" using a 5/32" Allen Wrench that we are used to using today. One Allen Wrench instead of two or more. What a neat idea. One of the ways to tell the age range of those early accessories are the set screw size. If I put a new rubber sleeve on the 2-1/2" Sanding drum from 1954 you would not be able to tell it from one bought recently. If I showed you the same 1954 Sanding drum and one from 1952 the set screw would tell the difference. I could go on and on, I really like Shopsmiths
JPG I am not sure if they did angle the set screw holes in to match the taper. I will try to figure out a way to check that tomorrow. It would be a good idea to seat the set screws flat to the taper. BTW you are dating yourself with the wiper comment. Of course you did buy your "Goldie" new. Glad you still have it.

Re: Arbors
The angled set screw topic started with the adapter for a nova(?) chuck that had a bad habit of working loose.chapmanruss wrote: . . .

Apparently the adapter is now made in two versions(one for SS and a straight one for 'the rest of the world').
As a result of that folks began checking current saw blade arbors and 'discovered' they are skewed as well. A 5/16" bolt leans away from the blade.
One problem that has occurred with standardization of screws etc. is that back yonder it was possible to procure screws with 5/32" sockets regardless of their 'size'. That is why some 1/4" screws that fit the 5/32" wrench back yonder have been changed to 3/16" screws(a standard size for 5/32 socket screws).

Re: Arbors
I'm going to have to get a longer threaded screw to check the Arbors with the 1/4" set screw. I don't have a long enough 1/4"-28 thread to tell for sure. Every arbor and spindle I checked with the 5/16" set screw does look like it is angled to the spindle taper except 12431 5/8" Saw Arbor made for the Mark 2 . That is going back to the ones from the 1950's through current. Not all Router Chucks with the 5/16" set screw has the angle and Drill chucks do not. Of interest the 2-1/2" Jointer Head with 5/16" set screws has the angle.
I'll update this when I have been able to check the 1/4" set screws.
My Nova Chuck Adapter is angled.
UPDATE:
I checked the Arbors, Spindles and others that use a 1/4" set screw (1947 - 1953). None are angled to match the Spindle taper including the 2-1/2" Jointer Head. It appears that was a change that came out with the Mark 5 Arbors. I learned something new today

Some of the MK V arbors are not angled also. There is another thread here where we had an extensive discussion and I posted pictures of some of my MK V arbors that are not angled.chapmanruss wrote:I'm going to have to get a longer threaded screw to check the Arbors with the 1/4" set screw. Re: Arbors
I just checked all of my Arbors (40), Shaper Spindles (4), Router Chucks (4) and Lathe Drive & Screw Centers (7) that have a 5/16" set screw. This includes several uncommon arbors like 555572 SawSmith 1-1/4" Saw Blade Arbor, 555619 Molder/Dado Arbor, The Grinding Wheel Arbor and the Biscuit Joiner Blade Arbor. The only ones not angled are my two 1/2" Router Chucks, one old and one current, 12431 Mark 2 Saw Blade Arbor and the SawSmith Radial Arm Saw 1-1/4" Arbors part number 27032. The Eliminator Chuck and current 1/4" Router Chuck are angled.
John, I am curious which of your arbors are not angled. I may have missed something in my searches.

Re: Arbors
Nipper10,
Do you have a Sawsmith Radial Arm Saw? The 1-1/4" Arbor P/N 27032 and 505512 were made for use only on the Sawsmith RAS. There were two versions plus a third one with the black protective coating (505512). The Part Numbers for all Shopsmith items changed in 1964. At the same time the black protective coating was added to parts. 505512 is the same as 27032 version 2 with the black protective coating and new part number. The picture below is for your reference.
Sorry I do not have an extra one of either version of P/N 27032.
