Yesterday was the day to begin working out the concepts of the window valences. That involved setting up the oscillating disc sander and creating a table with a guide ring. The oscillating unit works very well with one exception. The cable they send to connect the unit to the quill gave way almost instantly. The ferule was not completely mashed and the cable slipped out. A piece of 1/4" nylon line solved the problem in about 30 seconds and works fine. As usual it only takes about 5 min or less to set up. It sanded the inside profile on 4 1/4" alder perfectly with no burns.

The exact same thing happened to me. I was able to get the cable back through the ferule and smashed down to hold. However, I had the arm installed on the quill pinion shaft adjusted improperly. With the cable fixed it held but the arm bottomed out on the down stroke of the drum and broke the delrin gear in the drive housing. The SS web site said both the gear and cable were available but it turned out the gear was no longer available. I called SS and CS said send it to us and we will fix it. They fixed it for no charge even though it was my fault.

Since I have a dedicated drill press I leave the gear box attached all the time and just slide it up on the way tubes when not in use so it does not run all the time. I decided to leave the quill pinion shaft arm installed and moved the drill press feed handle to the left side. I did mark the pinion shaft and the arm with a center punch dimple in case I ever have to remove the arm. That way I can easily put the arm back on in proper alignment.

Having the feed handle is not a real problem for me but I have toyed with the idea of rotating the sander gear box 180° on the bracket on putting the arm on the left side of the pinion shaft.

After a day in the shop, part of which was dealing with the drum sander to make the valences I am very pleased with the machine. I profile sanded both the inside and outside curves with it and the results are great.
