Workshop Project

I bought these cabinets a few years ago to solve my organization problems. They didn't! The left hand cabinet had three drawers similar to the one in the bottom. They were so deep I couldn't find anything in them when I wanted. Sometimes found tools I had forgotteten I had.

I decided to remove them and make shallow drawers ( about 3"deep) so the space will have six instead of three with the bottom one still being the original depth but I will cut the extra hight of the front to accomodate drawer #5. Hopefully this will allow me to see what I have, and find the tools I need.

I am cutting some of the pieces of the old drawers to reuse them in the new format but will have to make one new front as with the new congfiguration I can't get six fronts out of the existing ones.

If this works out, I might do the same with the right hand cabinet as at the moment it basically has only two shelves and a lot of wasted space.

Don't forget that some items that you store will not fit into a 3" drawer. That is the one complaint I have about my Huskey tool cabinet. Only two deep drawers. No place for my circular saws and routers.

Hi Dusty:

I have looked at a Husky unit for sometime now, mainly for the shallow drwares, but because of size and weight I can't get in down steep stairs and around a tight coener to my basement shop.

That's what motivated me to try and modify the existing cabinet so I can store my small tools, accessories, and those things we keep "just in case"

My bigger tools all fit on shelves in the "furnace room".

Currently painting the drawer fronts so I should be finished this weekend.

I made my usual errors along the way including a miscalculation on drawer #5 which resulted in having to make a new one. At least one drawer front was made with a different material than the others which are original so there is a slight difference in thickness, but overall I am satisfied.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to reorganize all my tools, etc to fit the new configuration.

Have Fun.
