Finished the 17 pens today. Now if I could remember what I did with the red gift bags I give them away in???? That is what happens when I clean up.

It has been just so wet that the garden work is falling farther and farther behind. At this point I have some tomatoes and some pepper plants in and that is it.

Asparagus did not come up this spring. Not sure it worth it but I guess I give it another go. It takes 3 years for them to get to the point you can really harvest them and I think this is the 4th time I have had to start over. Planted in all different locations so not quite sure what happens. This next time I'm replanting in one location and adding a new location. This stuff comes up along the railroad tracks and other places pretty much on its own so why the problems in a garden??

Just a cool 51 today then three 80+ days coming up, and only tomorrow doesn't have rain in the forecast, great for the work I have to do but all the rain is really a bit much.

When I established my asparagus, I was told by my neighbor to use a bag of water softener salt since it would keep the grass down and the asparagus would like it. I tried it and it worked!

That's interesting. We don't have a water softener and have never had one. I wonder what is in that salt that makes it so wonderful?

I do know that Magnesium sulfate is used in gardening, epsom salt. Wonder if water softener has some of that in it?

I think it may have something to do with asparagus originally growing in saltwater estuaries. I do know that we have had stalks as thick as a thumb.

I hate asparagus, but I think I would seek a different source for the salt.

Yesterdays project: Boot Dryer

The project was made from the scrap bin. The fan is salvaged refrigerator defrost fan. I was patting myself on the back for making the boot dryer for no money spent, that is until today. Went to my local big box store to buy a can of orange shellac and couldn't believe the price. $14.98 + $.45 for paintcare fee whatever that is for a total of $15.43 (Oregon doesn't have sales tax) I am so out of touch It sometimes scares me.

The steps from the deck to the ground had wood rot and were a accident in the making. The original steps only had 3 risers (pictured left). The new steps has 5 risers a landing and another rise to the deck. I made the steps as shallow as possible and still conform to the recommended rise. It seems the older I get the harder it is to climb stairs.The original steps were setting on cement blocks so I pored a cement slab for the new steps.

The first comment my wife made was "How are you going to finish the end of the rail?" The truth is I don't know what to do to make it look more finished.

A card box I made for my daughters wedding, yesterday (both wedding and making). I'll have to get a better photo, the wood looks much nicer than that in person.
