Hey all-

Here is my first completed project-it gave me some exposure to various tools on the SS I recently purchased and was overall a good learning experience. I'd like your critical input on the result.


The wife had brought some German breakfast boards with her when she moved over and they have been with us for 20 years. They served us well but we broke one or two, and it was time for a replacement.

I got a block of curly maple which was resawn down, table sawed to size, sanded for a couple days, finally burnishing and sealed.

i think the result is pretty good-the "curly" 3D wave in this wood is really neat to see-then run your hand over and find no wave at all.

I had some leftover material, so made a bunch of drink coasters as well.

Any thoughts on the water proofness of a linseed oil+ honey mix ?


I'm looking for a food safe coating that can hold off a bit of water/rinsing once in awhile.

The only thing I've come up with is Shellac so far.

I am not sure what the honey brings to the goal.

BLO is very good at resisting moisture when 'refreshed' often.

OH those are drop dead gorgeous.

Now tell us how they are to be used.

I know them as "German breakfast boards"...though I think they have numerous names.

They are simply a plate replacement for breads/cheeses/deli meats . They are prevalent in Germany though I've run into them in other European countries as well.

At first when the wife brought them out, I was skeptical- but actually now I like them...why ? I don't know-something different in the day-to-day I guess.

Are you planning on any engraving around the edges?
I wouldn't rule out a butcher block / cutting board oil /tong oil / danish oil ? I use olive oil on our cutting boards.

The wife wants me to burn the date/initials into them...but I tend toward the clean look.

I don't have an engraving tool, but I like that idea better than using a soldering iron to burn the nice wood.

I will look into this though !

The edges are available for personalization etc..

I just use plain USP mineral oil from the drug store. It's cheap, safe and easy to reapply a few times a year. You don't want anything that builds a film - that will just flake off into your food when you use a knife.
