New owner, old Shopsmith!

My dad received a Shopsmith 10E in 1949 as a combined high school graduation and Eagle Scout gift. Last week he gave it to me.

This is living history.

I intend to restore it, not back to showroom floor condition, but to "well used and well loved."

Pics to follow once I figure out how to post them here. Forgive the messy workshop!

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. You can find a lot of help here in restoring your Model 10E. We love to see pictures and know about your Shopsmith.

First if you need a manual check under the Maintenance and Repair section for Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. In it you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there and others are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Everett has become the Shopsmith historian by saving and restoring manuals and other documents. The Preliminary Magna Shopsmith Manual will be the closest one there available for your 10E but the diagrams and parts list will not be the same as yours. This was the original manual but if you do need one closer to your Shopsmith we can get you a digital copy somehow.

There were a number of changes to the Model 10E and 10ER while they were being manufactured. The headstock alone has seven versions. If you need help identifying parts just post a picture and we can help. I have restored 6 10E's, 11 10ER's and am working on another 10E and 3 10ER's. I have been working on cataloging the different parts using the machines I currently have and have restored already ranging from serial number 1077 (shown below) to 76928.

As for posting pictures select Upload attachment below the text box while drafting your post. Then Choose File and after choosing a picture from your files, Add the file and place it in the text box by selecting Place inline while the cursor in the location you want the picture placed. The image must be at most 2050 pixels wide and 1180 pixels high. You can also attach other files such as a PDF this way.

Russ there are three fully restored digital copies (one is the Preliminary, a 10E and a 10ER) on my Google Drive as well as a document illustrating the changes through production years that knew of when I wrote it.

I highly recommend the 1953 Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone that features the 10ER. It is a huge reference for that series Shopsmith and it is in a folder on My Google Drive as well.

Kindest Regards,

Everett

Sorry Everett,
I missed that 10E manual on the right end of the top row. That is the manual LoranMontgomery would want to use. It would be the closest to the Shopsmith he has unless his has the metal extension table instead of the early wood one. We know that change occurred around mid 1949. LorenMontgomery if it is the metal extension table use the 10ER manual. I would add my recommendation to Everett's that you would also get a lot out of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone if you haven't seen it before.
