A Bookshelf

Post by masonsailor2 »

The boss has requested a bookcase for her office so I started gluing up the wood today. It will be 8 foot high and four feet wide. It will be in two parts with the base being 30” high and 18” deep and the upper 12” deep and 65” high. I am going to use Honduran mahogany with zebra wood accent. The lower section will be divided by one partition and have four doors. One issue I have run into again is the lack of Honduran ply so I may have to use African mahogany for the backs or make my own like I did last time.

Hey, interesting project, I'd like to see the results.
I see you have a pretty large workshop. Do you have a track saw? Can you advise any?

The thing is, I'm selling my table saw now as it's not convenient for lager pieces and looking for a track saw as the seem to be more handy. I've read thousants of reviews now, I'm thinking of buying festool ts 75 which I found here
It seems more sturdy than dewalt ( but the price is high), guys say buy dewalt, most own them, but there are some issues I found in the feedbacks (it's not smooth while running and now really heavy duty), while festool is mostly reccomended and seems more durable.

I'd appreciate your advice!

No I don’t. I use a cut off shoe made of plywood and a worm drive skil saw. It’s rather old school but it works for me. If I had to buy one I would go for a festool. They are pricey but so far I am impressed with everything they make.

I have the TS55 and LOVE it. Unless you really need the extra capacity of the model 75 I'd set my sights on the 55. When I was planning on get one of these I thought I would get the 75 but went to a woodcraft store and did some hands on and talked to sales guy who was an owner. His advice turned out to be spot on for me and I have yet to have a situation where I would have needed the 75. Of course this is really a mater of what you need so.....

Yes costly but I was just using mine today on some mdf. My son happened to stop buy and could not believe how much saw dust gets caught by the festool vac and saw comb.

BTW you will find the saw is only part of the total cost. It comes with a track that is 1400mm so first off you will need a second track like that or opt for the longer track. You will need the connectors to put the two rails together and so on so it doesn't take long to rack up a pretty large investment. Well worth it in my mind but you do need deep pockets.

If you do decide to go the festool route there are a few of us owners here that might be able to help you decide what you "need".

"need"
Did't get what that's supposed to mean

Thanks anyway, I'll consider 55, maybe it will be powerful enough and I save a bit

I think that means one often perceives a need that in reality is a want.

'Future' need is tricky as one is not sure what that will be.

I think Ed presented that detail quite plainly.

I received all the mahogany ply and cut up what parts I needed and got the face frames glued to the shelves. I also milled up the counter trim with the zebra wood. With luck I will get everything to final dimensions tomorrow and assemble on Sun.

I spent the day continuing to mill up the components. The zebra wood trim and counter are done. Tomorrow is a lot of sanding and then maybe start assembly.
