Scrap Wood Business Card Case

Versions of these business card holders are all over the internet. I had a scrap of wood leftover from my platform rocker bases that I thought would work well. Basically similar construction to a band saw box. Band saw off the faces. Then hollow out the middle leaving three narrow edges and glue the faces back on.

In this case I also used my new Shopsmith oscillating drum sander (with a narrow diameter drum) to sand in the thumb/finger grab. That’s a very good tool. I know people have been using oscillating spindle sanders for a while. Not sure why I held out. Definitely does a better job than a non-oscillating drum.

I’m still not sure what kind of wood this is but probably walnut. The finish is just wax. The case holds about 15 standard business cards.

I’ve got a couple of other designs in my mind’s eye so there may be a version 2 or 3 of this project. I think they will make good holiday gifts. This one took me about three hours start to finish. I think having done one I could do it faster next time.

That’s a darned good-looking card holder, Al. And it strikes me as the type of project where making several wouldn’t take a whole lot longer than just one. What kind of wood do you have in mind for Xmas presents?

I think contrasting woods for the three 'layers' would be 'neat'!

Yes, Dennis, making more than one at a time makes sense now that I have worked out the dimensions and order of operations. I want to pick up some CA glue, however. I used hot hide glue for these and even though it sets pretty quickly, it doesn't set as quickly as CA. In addition, hot hide is a little messy to use while handling such small parts.

I've got more walnut scraps, more of the mystery wood that went into the rocker bases. I've also got some maple and mahogany scraps too. Thinking the next one might even be two-toned [as JPG suggest]. Plus I'm working on a design for one that has a top closure.

I've got a business trip this coming week and I am looking forward to taking the prototype with me to dish out a few cards.
