Re: Flag Display Case, My First
Well, certainly not perfect, but better than I have a right to expect, being that I’m such a beginner at this fine level of woodwork. I’ve only been able to do this because of a lot of reading about others work and tips, watching a lot of great videos by the masters and by average woodworkers, and especially your suggestions and encouragement. I think I’m in need of more suggestions on how to best correct/hide the slight joint misalignment. I’m thinking that a little sanding, finishing, and distance will minimize the problem. What do you think?

Re: Flag Display Case, My First
There are number of ways to "fix" or fudge that type of joint misalignment but with the glass/plexiglass in there I think your best options is either a combination of a little very fine walnut sanding dust (use a walnut scrap) mixed with glue put in the joint or (b) burnishing. Burnishing uses a very hard smooth object -- a glass bottle neck will work -- which you rub and press across the outside of the joint from the high side of the joint toward the low side, cursing some fibers into the gap.
If the glass wasn't already there, I think I'd run a very fine blade (think band saw) right through the top joint and then re-glue.
Let's see what other's suggest before you try to fix it.

Sanding fixes a lot of mistakes.

Re: Flag Display Case, My First
Glue/sawdust would be my choice. Slight round over of the sharp pointed corners will improve appearance.
This is not a slam dunk project - it IS difficult to get 'perfect' joints.

Re: Flag Display Case, My First
A little walnut dust from the disk sander mixed with glue like JPG said or just a little sand paper on a small block of wood and just round the corners over a little , sharp corners chip easy . JMO

Re: Flag Display Case, My First
Well, here it is after 3 coats of Old Masters Tung Oil Varnish, and I don’t think it needs a fourth. What are your thoughts on this?
I found a method of applying it using sand paper to create a slurry of walnut dust and finish that fills in the grain. For each coat I used 320 for the first, 400 for the second, and then 800 wet/dry sand paper to apply the finish, sanding with the grain, and then wiped off the excess. I also used the next application grit to sand the finish before the next coat (e.g. between 1st and 2nd coats I used 400 grit, and then used that same grit to apply the 2nd coat). I’m pretty happy with the result. I still need to do the back panel, but I think the hardest part is done.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement, I’ve certainly learned a few things, and had some fun doing it.
